The Shot List is a free publication about product photography, run by Elina Kustlyvy in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This page says what we collect, why, and where it's kept. We don't sell personal information, and we don't use advertising or ad trackers.

Reading the site

You can read everything without an account.

  • Page views. We count visits with Ghost's own web analytics: which page was viewed, where the visit came from (the referring site), and the browser, device type and country. It sets no cookies. To count a visit once, it keeps a random session identifier in your browser's local storage. We use these numbers only to see which reviews people read.
  • Settings in your browser. The site remembers a few choices in your browser's local storage: the grid size you picked, and that you closed the newsletter prompt (for 30 days). They never leave your device.

The newsletter

If you subscribe to The Weekly Shot List, we keep your email address (and your name, if you give it) in Ghost, the publishing software behind the site, along with the page you subscribed from. Newsletters are sent through Mailgun. Ghost records whether each newsletter was opened and which links were clicked; we use that only to see what readers find useful.

Every newsletter has an unsubscribe link. You can also unsubscribe from your account page.

Accounts and boards

An account lets you save shots to boards.

  • Signing in is handled by Clerk. It keeps your email address, your name, and how you sign in (for example, your Google account). It uses cookies to keep you signed in.
  • Your boards are stored in our database: your public handle (the name in your profile address, /u/your-handle/), your display name, your boards and the images you saved to them.
  • Private boards are visible only to you. Public boards can be seen by anyone with the link, appear on your profile, and can appear in search results.
  • Images you upload are stored in Cloudflare R2 and can only go on private boards. Each file has a long random address that isn't published anywhere, but anyone who has that exact address can open the image.
  • When you sign up, we ask whether you'd like the newsletter. The box starts unticked, and we add you only if you tick it.

Claiming a shot

If you use "Claim this shot", we receive the name, Instagram handle, email address and link you enter, so we can check the claim and credit you. We keep the message in email and use it only for that claim.

Where it's kept

The site and its database run on Zeabur. Cloudflare provides our domain, network and image storage (R2). Ghost runs on our own server. Clerk (accounts) and Mailgun (email) are based in the United States, so some information is stored or processed outside Canada.

Your choices

  • Delete your account from your account page (Account settings). Your boards, saved images and uploaded images are deleted with it. The newsletter is separate: unsubscribe from it too if you'd like.
  • Ask what we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it, by writing to [email protected]. We reply within 30 days.

Changes

If we change how we handle personal information, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
